🥪Spatial Typography & Depth

Video is inherently a 2D medium. As editors, we are constantly fighting to create the illusion of 3D depth. One of the most striking ways to do this is "Spatial Typography"—placing text physically inside the world of the video, rather than just slapping it on top as an overlay.

By placing massive typography behind your main subject but in front of the background, you establish three distinct planes of depth: Foreground (Subject), Midground (Text), and Background. This parallax effect instantly elevates the production value and makes the composition feel premium and cinematic.

It is heavily used in high-end documentaries, Masterclass intros, and top-tier YouTube creator content to introduce chapters or names with massive impact.

The manual way (and why it hurts)

The manual workflow for this effect is notoriously punishing. It requires a technique called Rotoscoping.

You must duplicate your video clip so you have two identical layers. On the top layer, you must use a masking tool (like After Effects' Roto Brush) to paint over your subject frame-by-frame, telling the computer exactly what is a person and what is a background.

If the person waves their hand, their fingers blur (motion blur), making the mask jittery. You then have to manually feather the edges, refine the matte, and fix the "chatter" around their hair. Once you finally have a clean cutout of the subject, you sandwich your text layer between the bottom video and the top cutout.

A 5-second clip can easily take 30-45 minutes of tedious masking work.
